June is the month of men’s health. Viva Health’s Quality Program Nurse Haley Hanson joined us on Studio10 and took a look at the top 5 ways men can get and stay healthy.

Now that the warmer weather is here, more people are going outside, and that helps address two of the top five ways to improve health:
• Number 1 is healthier food choices
• Number 2 remains active
In the summer, it is easier to choose healthier foods because there are so many fruits and vegetables available. When grilling, choose leaner meat such as flank steak, roast beef, T-bone steak and fillet. Grill skinless white meat chicken or ground turkey breast instead of richer crust. Pork chops or fillet are great options, as are fish such as salmon, tuna, mahi mahi, or tilapia.
Going for a walk with the family early in the morning or in the evening when it’s not that hot is a great way to keep active. Visit the neighborhood pool or play Whiffle Ball.
Q: These are all great ideas. What’s number 3 on the list?
A: stop smoking! I know this is easier said than done, but once you make up your mind to quit, avoid places where you used to smoke and try to go to more places where smoking is not allowed. Tell your family and friends that you are stopping so they can hold you accountable. Ask them to assist you by not smoking or offering you cigarettes in your area. Throw away all of your cigarettes, lighters, and ashtrays. Many everyday smokers are used to holding a cigarette, so stock up on lollipops, sugar-free gum, carrots, and celery sticks to help with frequent exercise. Also, talk to your doctor about nicotine replacement methods such as nicotine patches, chewing gum, and lozenges. They can be bought over the counter at your local pharmacy.
Q: Speaking of talking to a doctor, are there any other reasons men should see their doctor?
Answer: yes! That brings us to number 4. Having an annual check-up is important to prevent disease from occurring or to identify disease early on when treatment is most effective. Even if you don’t feel sick, it’s so important to get tested for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and cancer like the colon or prostate.
Q: You mentioned ways to improve physical health, but what about mental health?
A: The fifth and final component to getting and staying healthy is to seek help with mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, or substance abuse. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and men tend to hide it when they are not well and struggling emotionally. Don’t be ashamed to speak to a doctor if you are suffering.
