Infrared saunas are popping up across the country. You’re a new health craze claiming a list of the benefits of detox, weight loss, muscle recovery, and better sleep. But the risks could overheat the advantages?

Sweating comes in all shapes and sizes, and now it can be as easy to enjoy the benefits of a good sweat as relaxing in an infrared sauna.

“Traditional saunas heat the air around you, while infrared saunas heat your core body temperature. So you’re sweating on a cellular level, ”said Julie Wordell, Persphire employee.

Sessions last 40 minutes. Proponents believe there is a long list of benefits.

“So you stimulate your body in the same way that you do cardiovascular exercise,” explains Wordell.

Studies show that in a normal sauna you sweat out about three percent toxins and 97 percent water. With an infrared sauna, you sweat out 20 percent of the toxins and 80 percent of the water. A 2018 systematic review warns that infrared heat can cause overheating and dehydration, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke. In general, infrared saunas are considered safe for most people.

“I would tell anyone nervous about the technology that they shouldn’t be. This is a very safe and effective way of allowing your body to detox, ”said Wordell.

Doctors warn that if you have an implanted medical device or an acute or chronic condition, you should consult your doctor before using an infrared sauna. If you have low blood pressure, kidney disease, or are pregnant you may be more prone to dehydration.
