One of the worst things about returning to exercise after taking a break is getting sore. But did you know that a little sore muscles is good?

Sore muscles are usually referred to as “DOMS” or delayed onset of sore muscles, and according to Wellspan’s physical therapist Jessica Kuntz, it usually occurs about six to eight hours after your workout – and can last up to 72 hours.

Then why do we get sore?

“When we’re exercising and trying to build muscle, part of the process of building muscle is to break it down first to make it stronger, so some muscle soreness is expected afterwards,” said Kuntz.

Jessica says that sore muscles, or tension in the muscles you’ve exercised during a certain activity, should go away on their own and are completely normal. But if you have pain in a muscle or joint that you haven’t exercised and it doesn’t go away within five to seven days, she suggests seeing a doctor.

Healthy Living: Warming Up for Exercise

Jessica says sore muscles are not a sign of exercise progress. If you are tense and that tension or pain subsides while you warm up for your workout, you are good for today’s workout.

But if you still feel tense after warming up, it is better to pull back and rest.

If you still have pain or pain after two days, especially between 5 and 7 a.m., see a doctor. Especially when there is a blockage / catch / popping in a joint or muscle.
