Timing is crucial here because the longer the tick is attached, the more likely it is that it will transmit disease.
“They can transmit something called babesiosis like malaria or the symptoms can manifest like malaria,” said Amy Tiehel, program manager at Dare2BTick Aware. “They call them nature’s dirty needle because they can carry all of these things.”

Amy says there are two preventive measures families should take before going outside – spraying their bodies with tick repellent and wearing clothes that contain permethrin or on them.
Amy says most tick bites happen in your yard. She adds that tick checks should also be a mandatory part of your daily routine if you come from outside.
Finding ticks should be done in two steps: visually looking at your body and touching your hands over places where ticks might feel for a bump.
If you find a tick, remove it with pointed tweezers and never use a substance such as petroleum jelly or peppermint oil to “choke” the tick. Amy says that just excites it.
