Wholesome Consuming, Wholesome Companies Throughout COVID-19

Côte d’Ivoire, West Africa – As the mango season in Côte d’Ivoire begins on plantations in Côte d’Ivoire, three companies are already successfully negotiating the sale of their entire 2021 crop.

“ We had barely started harvesting [and] We had already sold all of our production to European importers, ”said one of the exporters. The first containers on the way to Europe bring this healthy and delicious fruit to European consumers and improve the economic health of Ivorian producers and their micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).

COVID-19 disruptions to world trade in tropical fruits and nuts have included supply chain disruptions and serious liquidity problems for growers. The perishability and limited shelf life of agricultural goods, combined with logistical problems and financial speculation, had posed additional challenges for exporters of tropical fruits in Côte d”Ivoire.

These add to the existing competitiveness and market access problems MSMEs face.

Eric Bambara, who runs one of the exporting companies, said: ” ” The UKTP project brings us closer to the unknown. UK and Europe and how can we successfully access these high potential markets? Support with quality improvement as well as brand image and marketing is crucial in order to achieve and maintain our presence in these markets. ”

One of the three companies that export mangoes to Europe is run by women and the mangoes are certified.

To address some of these challenges, tropical fruit and cashew producers in Côte d’Ivoire are receiving support from (UKTP), an International Trade Center initiative funded by the UK.

The UKTP helps to make a positive contribution to sustainable development and growth through targeted sector-specific support for MSMEs, including trade and market information, business development, quality improvement and certification, market access and export.

As the project progresses, support will continue to be given to additional tropical fruit and cashew nut MSMEs near their harvest season to find new buyers in the UK and Europe.

For the Cote d’Ivoire mango producers, eating well means eating healthy leads to a healthy business.
