Walter B. Saul Agricultural Excessive Faculty College students Deliver Wholesome Meals To The Fellowship With Henry Acquired Crops – CBS Philly

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A sure sign of spring has reopened in Roxborough. A farmers market brings healthy food to a community, not least thanks to the students.

It’s a sunny day and time to get summer fruits in the ground.

“I’ve never been to a farm and there’s so much to learn,” said ninth grader Destiny Crosby.

This is Henry Got Crops, an apt name for this agricultural oasis on Henry Avenue in front of Walter B. Saul Agricultural High School. It’s a partnership between the Weavers Way Co-Op school and the cooperative-affiliated nonprofit Food Moxie.

“They manage the educational programs here with Saul students that are about growing, eating and cooking with fresh produce,” said Nina Berryman, Weavers Way co-op farm manager.

Philadelphia Parks and Rec owns the land.

The cooperative’s partnership with Saul began to flourish in 2008 and has only grown since then. Students like these ninth graders learn agricultural practices right in school, even in the city.

“We plant lettuce as one of our regular activities,” said Greg Smith, natural resource management teacher at Saul. “This salad is picked by the students and then brought back to our cafeteria, where we feed our students these nutritious leafy vegetables.”

The seasonal farmers market is now open. Some of the products on the shelves are grown by students. Other products go to customers under the farm’s Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSAS).

“This farm is a great source of local food for the neighboring community,” said Berryman.

Henry Got Crops inspired Saul graduate Jaylynn Gardner to study Food Science at Penn State. She works part time on the farm.

“There aren’t as many people of color in Penn State as I am, especially in the agribusiness major overall,” Gardner said.

The next generation is ready to learn and grow.

“You do so much work every day,” said ninth grader Jade Jones. “I never thought I’d be part of something so great.”

The farmers’ market is open three days a week – Tuesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
