Three eating places on the Las Vegas Strip are including a COVID-19 surcharge to friends’ payments
A new service charge will be added to the restaurant’s receipts to offset the cost of COVID-19-related expenses.
El Segundo Sol in the Fashion Show Mall, Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab in the Forum Shops in Caesars and Mon Ami Gabi in Paris Las Vegas now charge a surcharge of 4 percent. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports that the guest check fee is: “To offset the limitations on our business caused by the COVID-19 crisis, a 4% surcharge has been added to all guest checks. If you’d like this removed please let us know. “
Chicago-based parent company Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises says the added cost of personal protective equipment, new hygiene practices, the rising price of groceries, and 50 percent occupancy have forced the company to add the new surcharge. Salad Entertain President RJ Melman told the newspaper that the optional surcharge is “a necessary step at a time when unexpected costs have threatened the very survival of our business”.
Last year Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab landed among Las Vegas restaurants on the list of the most successful independent restaurants in the country. The magazine estimated that with an average check of $ 77 and 260,000 covers, the restaurant had sales of $ 22,264,200 in 2018, making it number 18 on the list.
The new surcharge is not only included in the restaurant bills on the Strip. Tacoman Grille, a Henderson Mexican restaurant, and Roberto’s Tacos also added a surcharge for beef. Tacoman charges an additional $ 2 for all beef products ordered on its menu.
Lotus of Siam, which has reopened its location in the commercial center, is charging a 3 percent surcharge to pay for health care costs for its employees, RJ reports.
Since 2016, restaurants such as Beer Park, Hexx Kitchen & Bar and Alexxa’s Bar in Paris Las Vegas, Cabo Wabo Cantina in the Miracle Mile Shops in the Planet Hollywood Resort and the Chayo Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Bar on Linq Promenade have had a concession added franchise fee to their customers’ bills. Fees fall in the neighborhood of 4.7 to 4.85 percent pinned on the bill and then taxed. JRS Hospitality owns all of these venues, and a company spokesperson at the time said the fees “partially offset increasing operating and labor costs in the effective resort corridor.”
