“That is the place the business can discover inspiration for wholesome consuming”

The time has finally come – the Dutch company Van Gelder Groente en Fruit’s Experience Center has opened. This is where the industry can find inspiration for everything that is possible with healthy food. “Visitors are welcome Monday to Friday between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm. They can immerse themselves in the world of healthy eating, taste and sustainability. When you go out, you will be amazed. You know what there is ‘Possible with fruit and vegetables. And of course there is a lot to try, ”begins Gerrit van Gelder.

Automated warehouse
The shuttles in Van Gelder’s automated warehouse are busy again. The reopening of the hospitality industry had a positive effect on sales. Van Gelder moved into new premises immediately after COVID-19 hit the Netherlands. He always wanted to show the warehouse in all its glory at work. This long-cherished wish has finally come true. “There was a temporary upswing last summer. We assume that we can now continue to deliver fully.”

The advanced shuttle system is sufficient for 52,000 storage locations. It is operated by 92 ADAPTOs. At the workplace, the order picker receives the products in boxes. Completed orders are immediately returned to the cold store. When it is time. the orders are automatically prepared at the dock. Thanks to investments in the millions, the company with 250 employees now has 15 employees. Temporary workers were made redundant. But in the fully automated 24/7 warehouse there are now a lot of new staff positions.

Added value for chefs
The new Van Gelder Groente en Fruit building is a showpiece in several ways. Last weekend, for example, was the long-awaited opening of the Experience Center. “No matter how highly automated our warehouse is, we are not interested in products like cauliflower, cucumber or iceberg lettuce. This is not our added value. That is why we invite members of the hotel industry to be inspired, ”continues Gerrit.

“We want to show them how they can present healthy products in an attractive way. We offer the experience and try to convey it to the chefs. They always leave with information and recipes with which to distinguish themselves. Chefs need to offer their guests a great dining experience. Then they will surely return. “

Visitors can also check out the latest fruit and vegetable gadgets. “For example, salad on rolls. These come from the plant production units of the PlantLab. There are herbal towers. People can get ideas from Vreugdenhil’s Pick-and-Joy vegetables. Visit the Fresh Plaza editor for a warm sandwich that included pulled jackfruit, Greek coleslaw, wasabi dressing and roasted sesame seeds, “explains Van Gelder.

“Citizens as well as companies and customers are very welcome. You can enjoy a healthy smoothie every day. Or a delicious lunch such as a delicious soup, fresh sandwiches or warm pasta. Also in the morning next to a cup of coffee, delicious fruit cake or apple cake is waiting for you. Or Discover our unique tea concept. And see how a fresh smoothie is created before your eyes. “

Win win
“The PlantLab understands indoor cultivation. We have customer and taste know-how. In just 18 days we have grown salads and herbs as sustainably as possible. This is how we create win-win situations, and we do that with all of our partners, ”says Gerrit. Various providers have therefore used the new building and booked meeting rooms. These include Zespri, Fruity Pack, Schaap Holland, Peka Kroef, Beekers Berries, Koppert Cress and FruitMasters.

“Our daily work is from the perspective of a grower who wants to see his products flourish. With the passion of a greengrocer who only wants the best for his customers. And from the conviction of a chef who expects the best ingredients for his guests. We want to deliver the best fresh products every day. That’s why I think it’s so great that we have opened this center. One of the education, experience, innovation and inspiration in the field of freshness. And it is exactly where my father once bred his Brussels sprouts, “concludes Gerrit.
