Susan G. Komen® and American Bone Well being ™ be a part of forces in a marketing campaign to empower ladies by means of wholesome dwelling

DALLAS – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Susan G. Komen®, the world’s leading breast cancer organization, is partnering with American Bone Health ™ on a unique education campaign to educate women about the importance of healthy living in maintaining lifelong breast and bone health. The campaign, sponsored by Amgen, is designed to help women have constructive discussions with their physicians about appropriate screenings and diagnoses to understand the risk of breast cancer, bone loss and fractures that will develop throughout their lives.

“We know that the risk of breast cancer and fractures increases with age and that women who have had breast cancer treatment are at even greater risk of fractures,” said Paula Schneider, CEO of Susan G. Komen. “Empowering women to take proactive steps to improve their bone health is key to our goal of improving the quality of life in our breast cancer community.”

“We are proud to support Susan G. Komen and American Bone Health in this important initiative,” said Dr. Darryl Sleep, Senior Vice President of Global Medical and Chief Medical Officer at Amgen. “More needs to be done to raise awareness of the cause of potentially painful and life-changing fractures in women. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is underdiagnosed and under-treated, and unfortunately one fracture is more likely to lead to another. In addition, women with breast cancer may be at high risk of fractures due to adjuvant aromatase inhibitor therapy or skeletal events due to bone metastasis. This collaboration brings to life our commitment to predicting and preventing fractures in women at high risk of fractures through enhanced screening, risk identification, and education. ”

The collaboration will educate women about the importance of breast and bone health, including the importance of asking their caregivers if bone screening is right for them in addition to a mammogram, for ER + breast cancer patients about the increased risk of fractures, and for those with metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as stage IV, about the risk and prevention of skeletal-related events (SREs). The campaign is aimed at breast cancer survivors, people with MBC, and the general population of women over the age of 45.

“When it comes to bone health, women have to be your best lawyer. This campaign will empower women to take the lead when talking to their healthcare providers about their bones, ”said Cheryl Hostinak, executive director of American Bone Health. “Up to 1: 2 women over 50 break a bone due to osteoporosis. These fractures can be debilitating and even lead to loss of independence. Cancer survivors are particularly at risk because of the effects of the disease, as well as the side effects of some treatments. Our goal is to empower all women to take steps to manage their bone health and prevent bone loss and fractures. ”

As part of the launch of this initiative, Komen and American Bone Health will develop and conduct a survey to assess the personal bone health knowledge of women 45 years and older and women diagnosed with breast cancer. The campaign will direct participants to the American Bone Health Fracture Risk CalculatorTM to learn more about their risk factors. The results will help feed future work to expand knowledge and promote regular screening and healthy living.
