Letter: Select wholesome meals

As COVID-19 gradually loosens its deadly grip on Remembrance Day, we can focus again on the threat posed by our outdoor grill.

Yes that. People who grill hamburgers and hot dogs face a bad choice. The US Meat and Poultry Hotline recommends grilling at high temperatures to avoid food poisoning from E. coli and Salmonella bacteria. However, the National Cancer Institute warns that high temperature grilling of processed meat creates carcinogenic compounds.

Fortunately, we no longer have to choose between food poisoning and cancer.

A number of enterprising U.S. food processors have headed out to meet this challenge by creating a wide variety of convenient, healthy, and delicious plant-based vegetarian burgers, vegetarian dogs, and soy nuggets.

These products do not contain any nasty insects or carcinogenic compounds. They don’t have cholesterol, saturated fats, drugs, hormones, and pesticides like their animal-based alternatives. And they are waiting for us in the frozen section of our favorite supermarket, along with cheese, milk and nut-based ice cream.

On this Memorial Day in the shadow of COVID-19, we remain safe in several ways!
