A local hospital is helping to combat food insecurity by opening a healthy eating center for patients.

AHN Saint Vincent Hospital’s new Healthy Eating Center will provide nutritious foods to patients who do not have access to food.

The food is purchased through Erie’s Second Harvest Food Bank.

AHN patient studies show that food insecurity is a problem across the health system. This means that many families have trouble putting food on the table.

The food center offers patients with financial difficulties the opportunity to gain access to healthy food and to find out about disease-specific diets.

“Food is medicine and we understand that people cannot manage their chronic nursing conditions if they do not have access to this healthy food. The ability to provide healthy food to patients is just another tool we can use to cope with people’s chronic care conditions, ”said Dr. Elizabeth Cuevas, Head of Department at the AHN Center for Inclusive Health.

The Healthy Food Center is open to patients Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
